The Model Railway Club is the oldest in the world. Established in 1910, we have since 1960 occupied our own club rooms at ‘Keen House’ in central London,.

Our facilities include a lounge/lecture room, containing a licensed bar, tea bar and test tracks, with all the major gauges. There is also the library and lower hall, where most of our modelling projects are worked on. The Club’s workshop, equipped with drill press, lathes and milling machines is also located there.

Meetings are held every Thursday evening from about 7.00 pm onwards. During the autumn, winter and spring the second meeting in the month is normally a lecture about railways or modelling. The other Thursdays are ‘track nights’, when members bring in models to run on the test tracks, drop into the library, work on the projects, or just gossip about the hobby and railways in general.

We have one of the finest collections of books and magazines on railway and modelling topics in Europe. The library is open on track nights, for historical research, browsing and lending books and videos. It also opens at other times by prior arrangement.

The Club builds and operates layouts in a variety of scales. ‘Copenhagen Fields’ (2mm fine scale) is based on our local railway – the lines out of King’s Cross, whilst ‘Happisburgh’ (O gauge) represents a station on the Norfolk coast in the late 1950’s/early 60’s. Both these layouts are well known in national magazines and on the ‘exhibition circuit’.

Two other layouts are under construction – ‘Keengate’, a modern image OO gauge continuous run, and ‘Putnam’, an American HO layout. Several other members layouts also appear from time to time at Keen House.

The layout leaders always welcome new faces, whether novices or highly skilled – one member contributes buildings from the Far East to Copenhagen Fields!

‘The Bulletin’ is our comprehensive bi-monthly newsletter, which contains articles about The Club’s activities and the railway world, both real and in model form. Together with Warners the MRC helps to organise ‘The London Festival of Railway Modelling’ which is held at Alexandra Palace each year. We also hold occasional weekend open days and mini-exhibitions at Keen House. These offer the chance to meet the more specialist groups that serve the hobby.

As you can see, we’ve got a lot going on. If you feel you’d like to join us, just call in any Thursday evening for an informal drink and a chat. Visitors are always welcome and there’s no obligation.
